Sailing with Stress, Revisited: What I Knew Before the Boat

Reading the boat manual before setting sail

On freezing, listening, and the wind

You know that feeling when you walk into a room and immediately feel drained? Or when someone says something and your whole body tightens before your mind catches up? For me, that’s my energy field responding. I’ve worked with EMF (electro-magnetic field) Balancing for over 25 years, and it has been one of the steadiest threads through all of it, helping me respond from my center instead of reacting from my edges.

Which brings me to a boat.

A few years back, Kevin and I bought a small sailboat. We are not sailors, and, as I wrote about here, no one in their right mind learns to sail on the Columbia River in the windsurfing capital of the world. But out we went, sails up, feeling pretty good, until one of those wind blasts stormed into us and the boat was being wildly tossed about.

Kevin jumped into action. As he yelled “untie the sails,” I frantically thought, “wait, let’s think this through,” not moving a muscle, trying not to fall out of the boat. I was busy running through how I would find him in the river after he went overboard.

We lived. Barely. Kevin got us back to shore, and we would have given that boat away right then if anyone had wanted it.

What I didn’t write about then is how embarrassed I was. I froze. I didn’t help. I was ashamed of not meeting the task at hand, not holding up my end. I’ve since decided that should that type of situation occur again, I will either follow the order Kevin shouts out or go into it far better prepared for emergencies. Probably both.

And here’s the part I’ve been thinking about lately. I knew. Before we ever left the dock, I wanted instruction beyond one video. A class, an instructor, someone to show me how before the wind showed up. Kevin likes to learn by jumping in, and for some things that works beautifully. For this one, I wish I had listened to my own knowing. It was there.

I usually have a backup plan, and I think that has softened a lot of freeze moments in my life. Tools, preparation, and lessons are good. In my 2021 post I shared a list of them. But none of them can help if I’ve already talked myself out of what I know.

That’s the part that has changed over time and without one big moment. Twenty-six years ago, in the darkest stretch of my life, I committed to standing up and doing the best I could for my two kids. EMF Balancing was the foundation I built on.

Since then, I’ve become less reactive and more confident. I notice more quickly when something doesn’t feel right, and I follow it (usually), building internal trust and guidance. I’m no longer as agreeable as I was in all situations, and what matters most to me comes first now.

The wind still comes, of course. I just hear myself sooner.

Warmly,

Suzanne

P.S. The EMF Balancing Foundations work is available on demand if you’re called to clear and balance your energy field. For me, it eased old patterns and made decisions feel more rooted, balanced and powerful.
